Social Media: Risks and Realities

Avant Resources has created the video Social Media: Risks and Realities to help employers train their workers in responsible social media use.

The current number of active Facebook users is more than twice the entire US population, yet virtually no major companies have adequate social media policies and training in place. The cost of ignoring these risks is a lot higher than most employers would like to believe.
Symantec Corp.’s 2011 Social Media Protection Flash Poll examined the potential costs of a social media-related incidents. The shocking results showed that 94% of responding employers reported negative consequences due to social media conduct, and those mistakes can cost the average employer $4 million per year. That’s $28,571 per character in a 140 character Tweet.
Brent Ballow, an employment attorney and leading authority on social media in the workplace, is helping sound the alarm. “I was shocked by how many companies across the U.S. don’t have a social media policy or training in place”, Ballow said. “Almost every one of their employees has a publicly accessible social media account with the potential to embarrass the company or spark a costly lawsuit. Until companies start treating social media risks as seriously as sexual harassment and discrimination, they’re at risk. ”
Because they’ve never been properly trained on the realities of social media and the workplace, many employees believe they understand what is and isn’t safe to post online. This means they’re usually surprised when they get fired because they’ve posted confidential information, or defamed their bosses, employer or customers. The key to preventing these unfortunate situations is education and having a clear policy in place, but that simply isn’t happening yet on a major scale.
